One in 42 Spanish residents is in the country illegally, according to applications for a controversial immigrant amnesty introduced by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.
Almost 1.2mn unauthorised immigrants applied for legal status under the amnesty programme, the leftwing government said on Thursday, far exceeding its estimates that as many as 500,000 would apply.
