The White House has accused more than 40 countries, including Canada, Mexico and Japan, of helping Beijing illegally avoid US tariffs by rerouting trade through nations subject to lower American import duties than China.
The nations and the EU were enabling the evasion of tariffs for $60bn in trade, the White House said in a report titled “The Great Transshipment Scam”. It also cited other US government and private sector reports which estimated the range of transshipment volumes from $40bn to $303bn.
