IBM’s share plunge is a warning to the IT sector

AI demand is starting to crowd out other forms of sector spending

The devastation to software stocks known as the SaaSpocalypse mainly reflects a fear that AI will eventually reduce the need for much of today’s software, rather than any evidence that it is having an impact already."}],[{"start":109,"text":"After the first quarter of this year, IT research firm Gartner reacted to soaring data-centre spending by simply raising its IT spending forecasts for 2026. One big question that will be on Wall Street’s mind as the latest earnings season gets under way is how far the infrastructure boom has already gone in crowding out regular IT spending elsewhere. The other is whether spiralling infrastructure costs will raise the price of — and limit demand for — new AI services."}],[{"start":149.85,"text":"Looking for other potential victims, investors reacted to the IBM news by taking another bite out of the shares of software companies including ServiceNow and Adobe.
